After the rainiest days, the sun shines the brightest
I wanna talk about the “mean reds”. If you have never heard of that state of mind I will let Holly Golightly do the explaining for you.
In the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” while talking with her new neighbor, Audrey Hepburn’s character asks him if he has got the “mean reds” before. Confused Paul suggests that maybe she means “the blues”, but this is what Holly gives as an answer:
“No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?“
Being Afraid Is The Worst Sin There Is
Pretty sure that I have never stumbled onto a more romantic way of explaining what anxiety actually feels like. I believe that many of us have experienced this type of emotional state at some point in our lives.
Maybe it has been an exam, a new job interview or changing appratments and cities to live. These are the little stresses that sometimes we put ourselves into so we can upgrade ourselfs and make our lives better. Of cousre they are only short tearm inconvinienses, so we know that the stress that we are going through is just for a while. Just till we hit the goal.
It is hard for us to imagine that a dazzling and stubborn character as Holly’s can get anxious about anything. Her free spirit and her love for life are more than captivating.
But this makes her more relatable and puts her in the role of a true cinematic icon.
But what are mean reads acctually about?
The word “anxiety” is used quite often from all kinds of meme pages and in the Urban dictionary is pointed out as “The biggest bitch you will ever meet. Only thing is it’s inside your head.”
The term is part of the common language and refers to pathological states that, bear a confusing resemblance to fear and depression. They can come and go and if you know how you can totally control them.
The mean reds are not easy to identify and it’s important to find a self-care method that works for you.
Holly’s remedy is simple. She has found her “safe place” and when she gets this uncomfortable feelings she hops in the cab and goes straight to Tiffany’s.
“Well, when I get [the mean reds] the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany’s. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it. Nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that’d make me feel like Tiffany’s, then… then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name!”
This is why it’s a good idea to have a real-life place or even a person that is like Tiffany’s for you. You know, just in case.
Just remember, if you’re feeling low it’s not going to be like this forever. After all, the sun always shines brighter after a little rain.
